The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is the only adult burn center in Maryland, verified by the American Burn Association. Opened in 1968, the Center has a long history of providing high-quality burn care to patients from Maryland and beyond. As a comprehensive Burn Center, we offer the latest research and technologies for treating burn-related injuries from flames, chemicals, electricity, and scalds. We also provide treatment for complicated skin infections and other wounds. Our services include an inpatient Burn Unit, an Outpatient Burn Wound Clinic, and a Scar Revision Clinic.
To be a Burn Nurse, sharp clinical skills are needed. Responsibilities include but are not limited to pain management, fluid balance, critical care, stabilizing acutely burned patients, trauma recovery, and rehabilitation. We look after post-operative patients who undergo skin grafting or skin transplants. We deal with sepsis most of the time since all the patients' skin integrity is impaired. Thus, infection is almost always unavoidable. Being in Burns can be overwhelming for patients as they stay in the unit until the burn wounds are healed. Familiarization with complex dressing for complex wounds is a must for the role. Being a Burns Nurse means you must be ready to stand for long hours to complete a dressing and during a patient's shower.
