HJF is seeking a Scientist I to support the Enroute and Critical Care Department (ECD), within the Operational and Undersea Medicine Directorate (OUMD), located at the Naval Medical Research Command (NMRC). We are looking for someone with a strong background in trauma and/or orthopaedics and has familiarity with small animal work. This person will be expected to design experiments and actively conduct scientific research. Perform statistical analyses and is familiar with data scientist and classic statistical techniques using programs like R, Python, etc. This person will supervise and mentor junior scientists, research assistants, interns, and residents. Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific findings and concepts to develop new scientific questions, protocols, and technologies.

ECD conducts translational research across the continuum of care from point of injury to transport and definitive treatment. Research focus is on the biological response to polytraumatic injuries and the development of improved diagnostics, therapeutics, and decision-support tools for combat related injuries. The department employs animal models of various combat relevant polytrauma injury models to include traumatic brain injury, hemorrhage, soft tissue, intestinal and bone injury. Research efforts are aimed at characterizing potential adverse effects related to acute pre-hospital and prolonged field care and patient transport, and at identifying innovative treatment modalities. Additionally, wound infection and wound healing as common complication of polytraumatic injuries are investigated using cutting edge molecular, proteomic and artificial intelligence approaches.

Responsibilities
    Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols, solicits for research funding, prepares and submits scientific work at academic meetingsand for peer-reviewed publications.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Coordinates and contributes to new grant and funding applications.
  • Trains and supervises ans mentors laboratory technicians, research assistant, junior scientists and summer students.
  • Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctorate Degree required, preferably in Biology, Bioengineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Experience with animal models.
  • Background in critical care and/or orthopaedics preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills. Must be able to write scientific papers.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures and work independently.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor lower level technicians.
  • This position requires you to live in the US the past three out of five years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
  • This position is 100% on-site.
