Job Description
About the Position
CQ Roll Call is seeking a journalist to join our dynamic reporting team, with a focus on homeland security across federal agencies, in Congress and in courtrooms. This role will keep our readers informed about legislation, appropriations, executive actions and legal cases. This role will offer you the opportunity to break news and write enterprise stories related to immigration, politics and more, as well as contribute to podcasts, videos and events.

About the Team
The homeland security reporter is part of CQ Roll Call's coverage of both policy and politics in FiscalNote's mission to make government transparent for readers on the Hill, in the executive branch, and in the interest and industry groups with a stake in government decision-making.

About You
You are a self-motivated journalist with the drive to stay ahead of competitors on developments on your beat. You know how to navigate federal courts, track legislation and where to find the major players in Congress and the executive branch. You are also a team player, able and willing to collaborate with your colleagues and sometimes back them up on their beats.
What To Expect In This Position
  • Create a track record of reporting and writing perceptive, sophisticated stories that drive the conversation on Capitol Hill
  • Write clearly and accurately on tight deadlines, both breaking news and broader enterprise stories
  • Establish sources and contacts, and expand that list of experts
  • Read and track legislation, particularly spending bills
  • Handle a demanding, fast-moving beat
  • Dig through data and reports to find untold stories and be able to analyze data sets to determine newsworthy trends
  • Pitch and produce stories for all CQ and Roll Call products, and participate in events that showcase your expertise
  • Work with reporters whose beats touch on homeland security through the lens of Congress and government agencies, part of a collaborative newsroom that supports each other's work
  • Follow congressional hours for legislative activity that sometimes can run into evenings and weekends
What Sets You Apart
  • 5+ years of journalism experience covering homeland security, appropriations and related topics for newspapers, news websites, news magazines or other news organizations
  • Demonstrated coverage of Congress, federal agencies or a legislative body for a news outlet
  • Knowledge of immigration and its impact on the country and politics
  • Computer-assisted reporting skills including use of databases, Excel and other programs and tools
  • A track record of producing scoops and compelling features for news outlets
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills
  • A desire to work in a fast-paced, competitive environment
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
