UMMC Surgical Intensive Care Unit is a 24-bed adult critical care unit specializing in care of 10-15 surgical services.

Surgical services supported in the SICU include but are not limited to:

  • Emergency surgery
  • Transplant
  • Thoracic
  • ENT
  • Orthopedics
  • OMFS
  • Gynecology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Vascular Surgery

Surgical ICU Orientation

  • Based on your current level of skills and prior experience
  • Dedicated nurse educator that works to tailor orientation directly to your needs
  • SICU specific classes you will take to master the skills and equipment we use on this unit
  • New graduate nurses will also be enrolled in the hospital-wide New Graduate Residency program to offer additional support
  • Multiple learning opportunities beyond orientation that provide bedside nurses with advanced skills.

The SICU has a unit-based shared governance structure to allow all nurses to participate in decision making. This local structure also supports the hospital-wide governance structure, providing a SICU voice at all levels of decision making.

General Summary

  • This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses at UMMC who have greater than 12 months experience. This nurse will be competent in the skills/knowledge required and fully participate in unit governance. He/she will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. Independently provides and coordinates care provided to patients within a clinical specialty. Serves as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team. Demonstrates and models the full range of nursing professional practice in both care provided and in participation in development of strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction with service and cost effectiveness at the unit level. Is accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care. Is accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

    1. Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.; BSN preferred. Up-to-date status on all mandatory training and classes.
    2. One year nursing experience. Solid knowledge and clinical skills.
    3. Current CPR certification required.
    4. Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education every two years.
    5. Member of a professional organization.
    6. Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to lead others, such as effectiveness as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource. Demonstrated effectiveness as a multidisciplinary team member.
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
  • Demonstrated/documented highly effective interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.

Patient Safety

  • Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  • Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
