INTRODUCTION

  • This position is located at the George Washington Carver Center in Beltsville, MD
  • Working hours are 5:00 am - 1:30 pm, Monday - Friday
  • This is a full-time position with benefits
  • This position pays $17.44 per hour
  • Pre-employment criminal background checks, government security clearance checks, and drug testing are required

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cuts lawns, using a hand mower or power mower
  • Trims and edges around walks, flower beds, and walls, using clippers and edging tools
  • Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth, using shears
  • Rakes leaves and cleans or sweeps up litter using spiked stick or broom
  • Shovels snow from walks and driveways
  • Spreads salt on public passageways
  • Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs
  • Waters lawn and shrubs during dry periods using a hose or by activating a fixed or portable sprinkler system
  • Cleans out drainage ditches and culverts, using a shovel and rake
  • May operate walking-type power mowers, snowblowers, rototillers, or riding mowers
  • May operate chain saws, hedge trimmers, and other handheld power-operated tools to prune, cultivate, shovel, trim, cut, and dig
  • May use tractors equipped with attachments, such as mowers, lime or fertilizer spreaders, and lawn roller
  • May perform a variety of laboring duties when yard work is completed
  • Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

  • The Grounds Foreman supervises the incumbent

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • The incumbent must be able to stand 33%, walk 33% and sit 33% of the work time
  • These requirements are necessary to operate riding mowers to cut and trim grass, plant vegetation, rake, shovel, etc
  • He/she must be able to lift/carry 60 pounds and push/pull 100 pounds, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and handle, in order to load and unload materials and equipment; must be able to alert oneself to safety hazards and have a method of communication so those around can understand and respond
  • Must be able to see and tell colors, as driving and operating power equipment is required
  • Mainly work outside. Working conditions are subject to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Work conditions may be inconvenienced by dust, dirt, fumes, or flying objects (grass).
  • Due to the nature of work, occasionally heavy lifting is involved, requiring lifting and handling of heavy equipment. Lifting materials such as flats, mulch, fertilizer, lime, seed, and related items weighing up to 100 pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 1 year of experience in Landscape maintenance work including experience in mowing with a push mower and weeding
  • Should be able to provide own transportation to the work site
  • Must be able to work independently
