Job Description
Description

Are you an expert in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), or computer vision?

Are you excited by how these rapidly-evolving technologies are transforming the fields of remote sensing and Earth observation?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

We are seeking a Senior AI Researcher in Remote Sensing Applications to join the Complex Systems Group in the Research & Exploratory Development Department. Come help us invent the future of intelligent systems and solve real-world problems of national importance! We strive to foster an environment that welcomes a diversity of backgrounds and professional experience as we make advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence.

We want someone who is highly skilled and motivated to lead and support research projects to strengthen the intelligence gained from multimodal data, including images from Earth-observing satellites. We are particularly interested in improving our sponsors' understanding of climate change, its effect on national and international security, and how it will impact the livelihood of current and future generations.

In this role you will...

  • Contribute to and lead research projects in AI/ML, improving our ability to understand, mitigate, and adapt to rapid changes in climate and resultant patterns of human activity.

  • Use your skills in deep learning, computer vision, satellite image analysis, and information fusion in novel ways to address challenges determined by sponsor requirements.

  • Cultivate a long-term vision for your own research interests and collaborate on technical proposals to bring that vision to reality.

  • Work together with other APL researchers to grow and define our portfolio of AI research within the broader scope of intelligence and environmental resilience.

  • Communicate research outcomes to internal management, sponsors, and the broader scientific community through papers, presentations, conferences, and technical reports.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a M.S. in a STEM field (e.g., AI, Electrical and/or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Mathematics, or Physics).

  • Have 5+ years of research experience.
  • Have demonstrated ability to conduct machine learning research studies, to analyze remote sensing and/or environmental data, and to identify possible solutions to challenging problems given real-world constraints.
  • Have strong programming skills and proficiency in commonly-used ML languages such as Python, and ML and data science libraries, such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and OpenCV.

  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills and can articulate complex technical issues for a wide range of audiences.

  • The ability to obtain a Secret security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have a Ph.D. in a relevant field.

  • Have a track record of publishing your research in scholarly journals or conferences.
  • Have been a project manager or led small teams.

  • Have experience in writing technical proposals or other forms of business development.

  • Have experience with imaging applications for national security.
